Microsoft has officially previewed Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, scheduled for November 19, 2024, on both PC and Xbox Series X/S. Journalists from around the globe recently gathered in Arizona for an exclusive preview of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The event offered attendees the chance to explore the game's revolutionary new features in an immersive environment. Microsoft, alongside Asobo Studio’s leadership, showcased the future of flight simulation with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, emphasizing not just technical prowess but also the massive leap forward in gameplay depth and world realism. Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, kicked off the event, highlighting the legacy of the series, which now has over 45 million virtual pilots. With the upcoming release, Microsoft aims to surpass its previous achievements by introducing features that will make Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 a must-have for both casual flyers and serious aviation enthusiasts. This version introduces several new features and improvements in graphics, gameplay modes, and technical performance. This latest iteration builds on the success of its predecessors, bringing significant updates in gameplay, graphics, and technical features.

    New Career Modes and Gameplay

One of the notable additions is the introduction of career modes, offering players various aviation roles such as aerial firefighting, VIP transport, and search-and-rescue missions. These new mission types provide specific objectives for players. In some scenarios, players can also leave their aircraft to perform tasks such as photographing wildlife and more. Players can combat wildfires from above using specialized aircraft like the De Havilland Canada CL-415, provide luxury air travel for important clients, complete with challenging precision landings or perform emergency missions, navigating harsh conditions to save those in need. These career options provide players with specific goals, transforming the simulator from a sandbox experience to one with clear objectives and a sense of progression.

    Enhanced Technical Features

The game includes technical upgrades designed to enhance the realism of the digital environment. The detail of the game world has been significantly increased, with improvements to elements such as grass, rock formations, and other landscape features. Players will also experience enhanced flight physics, simulating interactions between aircraft and environmental factors like wind and surface textures. The updated aerodynamics model aims for greater accuracy in representing how aircraft behave in different environments. The game world’s detail has been increased by a factor of 4,000, making every aspect of the digital Earth—from pebbles and grass to wildlife—more lifelike than ever.

Additionally, new weather systems dynamically affect flight conditions. Natural phenomena such as cirrus clouds, tornadoes, and the northern lights not only enhance visual realism but also introduce new challenges for pilots. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 also features soft-body physics, allowing objects like hot air balloons and flags to respond realistically to wind and atmospheric conditions. . For example, if you're flying a hot air balloon or paragliding, you'll experience wind currents and air resistance as they would occur in real life.

One of the key technological advancements in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is its cloud-streaming technology, which significantly reduces the game's installation size. Unlike the 500GB footprint of the 2020 version, the 2024 edition will require only 50GB or less. Real-time cloud streaming allows players to download only the necessary data for their current flight path, optimizing performance and storage without sacrificing quality. Players no longer need to install hundreds of gigabytes of data on their local machines; instead, the game only streams what is necessary for each flight.

    A New Level of Immersion

The game’s digital world also features diverse and realistic terrains and biomes. The game world isn’t just visually richer—it’s physically interactive. The ground’s surface, from gravel and grass to water, now directly affects how aircraft perform during takeoffs and landings. Players flying watercraft will have to account for waves, while helicopters landing in dusty environments will kick up clouds of particles, potentially obstructing their vision. Players can explore a variety of environments, from cities to remote wilderness areas, with the option to land on unconventional surfaces such as grass fields, dirt strips, and water. Each surface type impacts flight dynamics differently. Every part of the Earth, from urban landscapes to remote wilderness, has been recreated. Players will encounter dynamic wildlife, including birds and land animals.

    Edition Breakdown and Pricing

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be available in several editions, offering different content options. The Standard Edition, priced at €80/$70, includes 70 aircraft and 150 airports. The Deluxe Edition, at €110/$100, adds more aircraft and five additional airports, increasing the total number to 80 aircraft and 155 airports, while the Premium Edition, at €140/$130, offers a total of 95 aircraft and 160 airports, with exclusive planes and airports that enhance the experience for dedicated flight enthusiasts. The Aviator’s Edition, priced at €220/$200, includes 125 aircraft, 160 airports, and exclusive content from previous versions like the De Havilland CL-415 and downloadable content.  Furthermore, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be available an exclusive Steelbox version. This limited-edition package includes physical collectibles, such as a model of the Antonov An-225, custom flight patches, and a numbered stand, offering a tangible connection to the game for die-hard fans.

    Additional Features

In addition to these features, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 offers a rental system for add-ons in the in-game marketplace. Instead of committing to purchasing full DLCs, players can now rent add-ons such as aircraft or airports before deciding to buy. This provides flexibility for users who may want to try out new content without making a full purchase upfront. Most importantly, the game is fully backward compatible with content from the 2020 version. Players can carry over existing add-ons, mods, and expansions without needing to repurchase or re-download them. This ensures that community-created content and official add-ons will work seamlessly in the new version. Additionally, players will be able to manage a fleet of aircraft within the game’s career mode, earning credits to purchase new planes or upgrade existing ones as they complete missions.

Pre-orders for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are available on platforms such as the Microsoft Store and Steam. Those who pre-order any edition of the game will receive access to the De Havilland Canada CL-415 firefighting aircraft within the current Flight Simulator 2020 version.

one big thing, what will happen to the (asobo/microsoft) aircraft we bought for msfs2020? Are they updated for free or de we need to buy them again?
    a

well it jut an upgrade off fs2020 not a new game, if 2020 is full integrated it means they updated version of old simulator and they ask 80$ for this upgrade? well im sceptic about it
    F

i partly agree, but when comparing to other sims, and games, which have for example each year a new version, no free updates or content, and each year you need to buy a 60 bucks new game and no possibility to use previous year content... than a upgrade for 80 is not that much. And remember you don't have to upgrade. MSFS2020 will continue to work and get updates.

Well, MS can certainly speak for themselves. But what will 3rd party developers do? The FS-world sometimes changes just with a World Update and it creates the need to upgrade all the airport sceneries. MS can certainly not dictate that no one will take money for that. And with all the technical changes it seems quite unlikely that they can assure that everything will be 100% compatible. FS2002 and FS2004 were very similar. Still both needed their own specific addon versions most of the time. So we'll see and I'm curious how well MS will be able to keep that promise. I remain sceptical.

Look, if you want to make your money's worth, pre-order the game now. You'll not only get to download the game right away when it comes out, but you'll get a free De Havilland Canada CL-415 in MSFS2020.

How do you get a free CL-415

You can be sure that addons will be compatible, but with 3rd party addons like PMDG for example you have to count with possibility that you could pay extra upgrade fee if you would like to use the 777 or 737 in MSFS2024. There are two options. You will be able to use the aircraft from MSFS2020 in MSFS2024 without any updates (new features) or they will bring it to the new sim for a upgrade fee. That is for aircraft. For scenery you can be sure that at the launch almost every payware and freeware airport will be messed up - not incompatible but it will not work as intended (new satelite data, new DEM etc). Developers and content creators will have to step in and make specific versions of their airports for MSFS24 and again two options - happened in the past as well. Offering airport XXXX as V2 as a completely standalone product with new features - you have to pay again almost full price and you can have some small discount as owner of MSFS2020 airport copy. OR they offer free upgrade or V1/V2 upgrade free/paid. New sim has new features with ground handling, ground vehicles, animated jetways with transparent glass and people moving here. In my opinion most of the payware airports are going to be like this - v2 for msfs2024 for almost full price with new features and if you would like to use the older msfs20 airport version without msfs2024 new features it s going to be free

Not that excited for MSFS2024. However, due to my age and retired status, I just enjoy my 2020 as much of my time spent on the sim is that of a casual user since I no longer fly in the real world. I suspect that there will be glitches in the rollout of the new sim and the price points for the various versions are high. Also, the emphasis in the sim on missions and the like, are not really what I am interested in. But, for those younger than me, seeking perhaps a career in aviation, it will probably have its place.

Okey how about working weather radar, working windscreen wipers or multiple jetway connections. Its nice to have more airplane in a basegame but to be honest that 737 MAX does not look really good.

Currently, age 65 for airlines. Although now the House in Congress has passed a bill that would raise it to age 67. Non airline ops outside of air carriers are higher depending on one's ability to pass a physical. I lost my medical certificate some years back.

Anyone else feeling a little uninspired by the new msfs 2024

As a livery-est... I am really keen to understand whether everything is really compatible or whether I am just about to get a lot of feedback that liveries no longer work... also keen to understand a couple of things from Flightsim.to peeps too: Firstly, is there going to be a 2024 store... and will our work get copied over to that? Also, if there is a new store, what measures will Flightsim take to ensure that 'Joe Scrote' doesn't just copy existing work over in their own name? I will be getting into the sim from day one and will be testing the liveries out, but it takes time (especially if we are just modelling in paint.net)

I think it will take at least 6 months of updates to get the new 2024 to get somewhere close as no doubt there will be bugs a plenty at the start.

if i cant run everything locally i doubt i would buy in. Having to rely on a connection for anything nowadays is risking a sub standard experience and like you say stutterfest inbound

the flight planner has been vastly improved but atc is a wait and see. they said they have to wait for the planner team to complete their actions before they can really go in and change the atc

from what i understand its a yes but developers may have to do a little additional coding to take advantage of the features in 2024 but your plane will fly

Yes compatible, but if you bought it from the msfs2020 store the publishers needs to register the same add-on in the store for msfs2024. Outside the store should work. Maybe you can copy the store bought add-ons manually. Also I'm wondering how orbx and flight1 will work, because the have their own registration software. I think what microsoft means is that backward compatibility is true but not their business if publisher do otherwise.

Aged 82, I am using MSFS 2020 from its release date; years before i started wit FS9, FS2004 until FSX 11.Due to this fact, my grandson got interested in flying; he became a real commercial pilot in Belgium - started with ryanair company and now in order to be more close to his home address, starting by BA in Brussels.
The only thing that bothers me of the sim, is the amount of memory it takes, expanding every time due to mandatory updates (actually my sims database gets around 700Gb, all addons included),

Being an avid FS pilot since the early days of the post polygon era(and past ppl student), and when introduced having mainly enjoyed the PREPAR3D product that was more professional study level that the Microsoft offering i am really enjoying 2020, but i don't plan to upgrade to the new offering due to the expected bugs, patches that will inevitably hinder the initial fun as experienced in 2020 ,when you power up only to find that you are awaiting the occasional massive updates that seemed to totally spoil an evenings planned flying when you got home from work, though the 2024 version being cloud based may not pose as much of a problem hopefully, though there will be no doubt some unexpected problems that will inevitably pop up, but maybe next year i would be tempted to jump if not earlier depending on the reviews and reported performances.
