Microsoft Flight Simulator has consistently set benchmarks for realism in flight simulation. As Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 approaches, Jörg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, has shared details about new advancements in the simulation in an interview with PCGamer.

    Integration of Data and Technology

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 continues to leverage data from Bing Maps, including satellite and aerial imagery. This data is updated every three years to maintain an accurate representation of the Earth's changing landscape. Additionally, the simulation uses high-resolution topographical data from LIDAR scans, providing detailed terrain information with meter-level precision. A notable feature of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be the simulation's goal to render every tree on Earth. Utilizing machine learning, the simulation will identify tree species and accurately place "trillions of trees" in real-time, according to Jörg Neumann.

In 2024, we see every tree on Earth. We have a machine learning look up, essentially, and then we know what the tree is, even down to the point where we know what the species likely is… and then we plant trees, literally trillions of trees, and it's all done in run time, so it's pretty damn accurate.

    Cloud-Based Data Management

To address the large data requirements of flight simulation, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 adopts a "thin client" model, shifting much of the data management to the cloud. This approach reduces the local installation size to 50 GB or less while allowing for extensive content integration.

    Dynamic Environment Enhancements

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 introduces dynamic elements, including various animal species and real-time ship tracking. These features aim to create a more vibrant and interactive virtual world. Additionally, ships will serve as potential landing zones.

Right now, we have every ship on Earth, right? Every ship on Earth sends us a transponder signal… you can land on every ship, and it looks like a first person shooter environment. I think we're in a new era of making games that I think are going to break new ground, from a scale and complexity perspective.

    Exploration Beyond Aircraft

A significant new feature allows players to leave their aircraft and explore the virtual world on foot. This enables players to experience various landscapes up close, including hiking trails and lakesides.

You can now exit the plane, walk around, in 2024. You can literally walk your favorite mountain path to your favorite hut in the mountains. Sit on the lake. See the sunset. It is truly a digital twin you can absorb.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2024, for Windows PCs, Xbox Series X|S, and via Xbox Cloud Gaming. As with previous versions, it is expected that the game will be available both for individual purchase and as part of the Xbox Game Pass.

God This sim is going to be horrible to the serious simmers... what a mess, what a bunch of useless and pathetic features.

The new MSFS series can be fun and explorative, or it can be serious and complex. The fact it is available on the Xbox is irrelevant (the PC version is superior in that it has aftermarket payware that XB users can't access). I can jump into the cockpit of the highly complex payware PMG 737-800, fire up the APU, and spend 30 minutes in the flight management computer programming a flight plan and systems settings, or I can go play with some landing challenges pre-programmed. It is up to the end user to decide how he/she wants to use MSFS. Don't like it? Go back to FSX and shut up.

I spent $4K (US) on my MSFS PC rig build, so try again. No, never mind. Don't bother responding again as I won't see anymore toilet splatter from you. You've been put on mute block here. Buh-bye.

I'm old enough to remember counting off the days when MSFS2020 was going to drop.......it's been an amazing flight.

Then don't play. Simple as that. You have XP, so it sounds like you're all set. As for the rest of us, I'm so excited to see the digital twin. What a great time to be alive! Sorry for the positivity, that doesn't appear to be your thing...

Not convinced on the last point. It should be flight simulator game not hiking simulator. Moreover in MSFS2020 at least 50 % of Earth terrain is not much detailed, terrain has low mesh and sometimes even low textures. It looks bad from higher altitude and looking at it from close view will be even worse.

I disagree, I think the ability to perform an actual virtual walkaround will be a welcome feature to most "serious simmers". I think you miss the point they were trying to make; they're not turning it into a hiking sim, they were emphasizing the level of freedom the player will have to explore the virtual world outside of the aircraft. Of course, this feature will still be focusing primarily on its relevant utility to aviation, that being performing an external preflight walkaround.

This is beyond exciting! And I love that the “serious simmer” gets bent out of shape about exploring the virtual world. When I lived in Washington I would fly my Cessna 150 to Ranger Creek near Mt. Rainier and go hiking along the river. You could also camp as well as the airstrip is on a campground. I really look forward to replicating that experience and also exploring new scenic destinations that I can only dream of doing at this time! My entire life and career revolves around aviation and trust me when I say that you can be a serious sim and do these kinds of activities because it’s what a ton of aviators do in real life!

Good, I hope you stay well clear of it! There’s tons of actual serious simmers that will embrace these features. Guess what, real world pilots (myself included) like to fly to places and go hiking. Thankfully folks with the similar mindset as you are a minority as you really bring down the sim community. Be best to just either keep to yourself or be a bit more open minded about what it means to simulate the world of aviation beyond flying an airliner.

Will 2024 address the Airports with broken Nodes and Links.? YSSY is a classic for not working and this is just 1 of hundreds ...Aircraft taxing on active main runways at International airports while airliners are trying to land or take off on them . Having lovely scenery with broken airport basses will not work....

Go fly X-plane is not a answer .. . He is stating the problems that NEED fixing after 40+ years

Its crazy that it does for me too

Are they commited to the airplanes that we have purchased with 2020 working in 2024? They have stated that there will be no multiplayer between 2020 and 2024, splitting a community. It happens with games, I get it... but most games do not have the DLC at the prices people have paid for their top tier airplanes.
I know Jorg stated that "most" of the planes from the "Microsoft Store" will be available.
I hope it works out as he states. It will be great for those that will be able to run this game on lower end machines for sure.
I hate the fact that those that have purchased their planes direct from third party will be excommunicated from the flight sim community if they don't re-buy their products. A lot of us have learned with PMDG products that if you wanted timely updates it was better to buy direct from PMDG, because, ASOBO took months sometimes to issue that same update in the sim....
I also hate that their is no Multiplayer between 2020 and 2024.
It is what it is I suppose.

Top irony indeed... Praising stuff like "walk your favourite mountain"... Damm maybe there will be guns, cows, pigs, trucks, tractors... What a bloody mess mate

Maybe you would be happier on a train simulator?

YOU morons will be happier with a train simulator, not me.

If this is the case for you stick to P3D, no shame. I for one look forward to evolving and incremental improvments to software and technology that lead us to where we are today. So far pretty much every sim makes you feel as if you "are" the airplane, rather than being inside of one. The ability to do pre-flights and so on will certainly enchance the sense of being a human being within an aircraft for me.

I agree. It will be a ton of fun to bush fly out to spots and hike around. This will be super useful simulation tool for me when I am prepping for backcountry stuff, and get a sense of scale/distance. Really looking forward to this all!

would be nice if we could create first person spawn points in the sdk outside the plane... so that way we can spawn in pilot lounges or offices.

do you think they will include simulated chest pain from all that walking ,as well as simulated paramedics

How can there be a Multiplayer function when it´s 2 different Worlds ! You don´t get it do you ?

Most of the terrain in the current sim isn't even close to being detailed and i really doubt it will improve in the next sim to the level of letting you hike anywhere in the world. Even the detailed parts of the world in the sim look like crap when you get really close.
