Experience the Italian Alps!
This mod contains customized height profiles for the Italian Alps. Ranging from the Mediterranean Sea across the Mont Blanc Massiv to the Dolomites and right to the Austrian-Slovenian border. The mod contains high definition LIDAR DEM data with a mesh resolution of 20m. The height resolution is as good as 0.1m.
The mod does not only provide mountain shapes being very close to reality, but also flattens lakes & rivers and gets rid of any terrain artifacts.

Disclaimer: The creator of this mod is not responsible for any problems, damage, incompatibilites to other mods or performance issues that might occur.
Please note, that this mod is a very high resolution mesh covering large areas across the Alps. The elevation data is applied through terraforming rectangles, thus loaded at a certain distance from the player. When travelling fast or at high alitude (wide range of view) there might be too many new rectangles loaded simultaneously and thus stutters might occur.
If you have any stutters you can try and reduce your ingame render settings or uninstall!
If you are mainly flying airliners in high altitude, there is probably no benefit for you in using this mod.
Affected Sceneries
As it stands, the famous Matterhorn mountain, seems to be the only mountain not represented realistically, what a shame. I think this is due to a very distorted generic mesh and will take an additional DEM to fix it.
Please report any bugs with sceneries or airports and I will see what I can do!
Credits
The elevation data used was a LIDAR 20m height profile of Italy compiled by Sonny (http://data.opendataportal.at/dataset/1461741e-a7f3-4681-a401-122ce627f0f2)
It was then transfered into MSFS using MSFS Toolkit by Nool Aerosystems (https://msfs.nool.ee/)

Looks of the mountains are definitely improved. But very severe stuttering on my machine. I have an i7 4790k, 32 GB RAM and an RX 580.
It seems that the stutters are caused by windows moving contents of the ram to the pagefile (which is on my very slow hdd, duh). Without the dem meshes installed, this does not happen. In particular, without the meshes the ram usage of the simulator is more or less constant. With the meshes enabled it rises slowly but steadily until it reaches some threshold which is when windows moves it out again and stutters happen. After that, the cycle begins again. My guess is that this is either a memory leak (can't exclude that but I'd expect this to be unlikely) or data is loaded from the disk into the ram. Looking at the disk usage of the simulator between the stutters there are always some meshes under the few biggest culprits. Interestingly, the dem regions are neither constant nor correlated with the region I'm currently flying in. The regions change all couple of seconds and I saw it eg load the dolomites when i was flying at very low altitudes around Zurich.
Just a wild guess here. I know that msfs needs as much ram as it can get. Or, put differently, limits its ram usage based on the available ram. Maybe there's something off in that calculation when the meshes need to be loaded and msfs allocates more ram than it should?

don't use this mod anymore. we all have this stutter. the mod is just here because the developer cannot temporarily disable it for the time being

Yes, there are freezes. Unfortunately I tried everything to update, but the results are the same. Something was changed by Asobo and I am not sure what to do. That is why this mod has been changed to unlisted!

Moin Troglodytus, bezugnehmend auf das, was Liml2020 unten geschrieben habe, ich kann ähnliche Erfahrungen berichten, zwar keine regelmäßigen Abstürze, aber ein extremes Hängenbleiben und Audiostottern, teilweise über Sekunden, und das leider auch im Austria 20m Dem, im Schweiz Dem... und wahrscheinlich bei den anderen DEMs genauso.
Ich weiss nicht ob es am World Update 7 liegt, aber der Zeitpunkt kommt hin: Als die Twin Otter am 19. Januar rauskam, lief alles noch wunderbar, heute wollte ich wieder durch die Alpen fliegen, komplette Katastrophe. Ich habe als Beispielflugroute für das Italien-DEM die Route Asiago LIDA nach Trento Matarello LIDT gewählt. Egal mit welchem Flugzeug, egal mit Multiplayer oder ohne, egal welches Wettersetting, das System stottert sich einen ab, als ob man versehentlich 3 unterschiedliche DEMS übereinander installiert hätte. Sim Rate erhöhen provoziert das Stottern ebenfalls.
Deaktivieren der Troglodytus-Alpen-DEMs behebt das Problem sofort (content.xml zwischendurch immer gelöscht)
Mein System ist ein 5900x und eine 3080ti, die haben das in Vergangenheit mit Bravour gepackt, auch liegen die Mods alle auf einer m.2 SSD.
Ich bin jetzt verschiedene Bereiche abgeflogen, die Performance aller DEMs von Mikea.at, Dir oder teilweise auch Taburet hat stark nachgelassen. Bei den sogenannten "Meshs" von Orbx für den Himalaya, Neuseeland, Island oder Alaska bemerke ich keine Einbußen...
Da ist also irgendetwas grundsätzlich seltsam auf einmal, daher würde ich den Sachverhalt erstmal nicht im Speziellen auf das Italy DEM schieben 😞
Ich denke zuerst müsste man rausfinden, was denn plötzlich anders ist, und warum ein 500mb 20m DEM einen High-End-Rechner plötzlich mehr belastet als ein Flug über 10 Gigabyte Photogrammetriedaten für eine heruntergeladene Großstadt... und am Ende auch die Fragestellung, ob ein Rekompilieren hier Besserung bringt (wobei Italien sich als eines der kleineren DEMs ja als Testobjekt anbieten würde)

After the WORLD Update VII the mod freeze the sim.
Tested with FBWa320, A320default, F18 , in community folder only this mod, takeoff from LIML rw36
May be it's just recompile

hello i see an artifact of the land on the piedmont plain when i'm far away .... like on monte rosa or matterhorn ... when i get close it disappears .. maybe it's just to be recompiled with the new SDK since the lodges have been updated .. .thank you for your work and I hope it can be resolved

Hello! So I know most of the alps got a 10m dem facelift so some of your addons aren't necessary. However does this Italian Alps mesh work better than Asobo's? I read they didn't do Italy Alps well. Thanks for info!

Thanks for asking. Yeah, so the generic mesh resolution is higher, especially for France, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. For Italy I am not so sure if the generic mesh is actually higher resolution.
However, the main advantage of the custom meshes are with reduced morphing effects. You know, when you get close to generic mountains in the simulator the terrain tends to pop up and dance all over the place. This is highly reduced with custom meshes.
So everything depends on your preferences :)

Unluckily, it seems that Dolomites 10DEM doesn't work on the last SU5.
AlpsDEM20 seems to be OK, instead.
Anyway, it is better to wait for hotfixing of SU5 by Asobo, before trying to work on these very useful mods.

Sorry to hear about that, did just a short flight and it seemed fine to me.
To be honest, there is not much for me to change or update anyways.. either the terraforming works with asobo or it does not :( Lets wait for the hotfix!
