About this addon
In 1943, the Hughes Aircraft Company took order from the USAAF of a hundred military reconnaissance aircraft with an ambitious flight enveloppe including fast altitude, high cruise speed and unbeatable range. Three years later, this first prototype of the XF-11 was born. 6,000 horsepower provided by two Pratt and Whitney 28-cylinders radial beasts. The impressive "Wasp Major". And everything about this aircraft is over the top:
- 16 enormous blades mounted on 2x2 contra-rotating propellers.
- A ceiling altitude of 44,000 feet.
- A cruise speed of 300 knots at 30,000 feet.
- And a range of 5,000 Miles (4,300 NM).
Unfortunately this beauty was destroyed during its first flight, ending prematurely the story of the XF-11, but luckily making no casualities.
Today, Flying Fries is proud and honored to present you a virtual replica of this iconic aircraft. We have been scraping old drawings, schematics and low-quality photos for months, and here is the result in all its glory. A fully custom made aircraft, with high quality modeling and texturing, and a unique level of interaction with each system and each switch, down to every single circuit breaker.
The flight model has also been patiently crafted using Asobo's latest tools: CFD, modern propellers, modern fuel system, etc.
From the complexity of the electrical and fuel systems to the custom pressurization module or the ground power unit and exterior items that you can operate directly by getting out of the plane and clicking on them, we have pushed the immersion to its maximum.
Take off, set the auto-pilot and explore the vast cockpit of the XF-11. You will start with the pilot and navigator area, but you will also be able to crawl in the nose section into the photographer seat, to take a look through the lens of your camera or just contemplate the world by sitting in the fully transparent glass dome at the nose. And when you're done, you can check on the lower deck that the access door is closed and all 12 fuel valves are properly set.
For the bravest among you, there are some random failures of various severity that could trigger during your flight, making your life much more complicated!
Did we mention the useful clipboard that will allow you to set all your options, check your failures and handle your refueling tasks without opening the in-game fuel menu? And did we mention the many easter eggs that are yours to find?
Here is a comprehensive list of this XF-11 features:
- Highly detailed 4K textures.
- Engines, landing gear bays, two cockpit decks, etc. fully modeled and textured.
- Precise CFD flight model.
- Era-correct auto-pilot installed.

Bought this just this week, and I love it. I don't mind the sounds, as some here seem to. The engine startup sounds are particularly nice. The model is great, and it's really fun to fly this unique piece of aviation history. Fun features, too. I'm flying it in 2020, and I'm a little disappointed that the pilot avatars don't work (stuck with Howard and Gus). I'm sure that was done as a 2024 workaround, but I have my own custom avatar, and I'm always a little sad not to be able to use him. Maybe in the future, or maybe I'm missing something? At the very least, does anyone know where the hair texture is for Howard? I have been able to repaint his clothes and facial hair color to match mine, but the hair on his head stays black no matter what part of his texture sheets I modify. Any clues would be appreciated. At any rate, I love the plane. All of FlyingFries' stuff is well worth the purchase.

Ce beau XF11 est un avion puissant avec une personnalité marquée et des sensations de vols très agréables. La modélisation offre de nombreux détails et le son est unique. La visite de l'intérieur vaut particulièrement le coup d'œil ! Bravo LordFrites !

This plane is very pleasant to fly, the work done for its modeling is Top, it is both stable, powerful and will appeal to pilots who like it when it goes into details. The sound is also very pleasant (I love the engine's hum at low revs) The sensations on the force feedback stick are also very pleasant with a certain resistance during maneuvers. (I like feeling the weight of the aircraft on the stick) Congratulations to its DEV (LordFrites), Great job

I really hate to complain about products, but the new sound package i feel is a downgrade to the previous sounds(unless mine is just bugged). Everything else is spectacular as always
Sorry to hear that. What exactly in the sound pack feels like a downgrade? Because previously it had no spatialization, no pitch change on RPM change (just and barely volume change), and the whole engine sound wasn't really textured. Plus all the additionnal sounds which were not included in the wwise package and had also dynamic limitations. And there was no custom headphone simulation, etc. So if you want to share what bothers you in particular, I might also notice it and fix it in the next update.
For me it is the engine sound itself, not really sure what way to put it but it sounds very artificial. Idle sounds pretty good and throaty like a radial should, but when you add power thats where it starts to stand out for me. Right around 2500 RPM it sounds like it has just about the same sound that the default S-76 in X-Plane 11 has and it loses that punch radial sound. Really hoping im not sounding rude, i just really love radials. All the other sounds are really nice, love the switch sounds especially

A wonderful plane...wish it did not "hobby-horse" (ie., constantly gain and lose altitude) while in Autopilot mode...
If I understood well, in the last Asobo/MS Dev Stream they were talking about *maybe* fixing this behavior that the simulation itself was doing on several aircraft. I'm not sure they will fix FS2020 at this point, but 2024 would be already nice :)

I love vintage planes, I ended up buying the aviator edition of MSFS 2024 because it was a great deal with tons of them (I never got to try 2020), and yet, I find myself flying the XF-11 the most out of all of them. The startup procedure all the way from the power of the plane taking off, you can just somehow feel it even through a computer screen. I was hesitant to spend $27 more on-top of the already $200 I just dropped, but this is one of those purchases I don't regret in the slightest. Not only does it feel great to fly (takes a bit of learning with the mixture) but it's pretty well compatible in 2024 in almost all aspects as of writing this. There isn't full compatibility yet (delay on Asobo's side) but it's basically 100% flyable in all the aspects that matter, and the best part is that Lord Frites plans to keep updating this plane for 2024 as the sim irons out, including the engine sounds everyone is talking about. On his discord he's already put a sample of the new sounds and they are *chef's kiss* "meaty". I honestly didn't mind the current sounds, but now I NEED those new engine sounds after hearing them. Once the new sound update drops, I'll be doing a full Japan tour again in this plane. (Twitch and YT is same as username here) If you love vintage planes, this one is a no brainer on whether or not to get it. This will also be coming to the MS2024 store when that finally opens (I got too impatient and bought it here instead).

I fly this behemoth almost every time i hop in the sim. Handles like an airline on approach and takes off like a fighter jet. This thing is also capable of stopping on short runways too. GTN750 is integrated. It is the full package. The random failures are also hilarious. Over time its quality has been a testament to its price tag and it is still a work in progress! Really fun to fly the VR1355 (Million Dollar Route) ;) I plan on making my own cinematic video about it soon. All Hail LordFrites!
Thank you Eric! Yes, it's still a work in progress, in the way: I still have ideas of things I could add, original liveries I could bring to the package, etc. I'm really glad you're enjoying it the way it's supposed to (even with the failures ;) ), and I'm impatient to see your video! Don't forget to post it on Flying Fries Discord once you've made it!

A really fun, if not difficult, airplane to fly. I agree with other users about the engine sounds, but they aren't that bad. Denarq did a mod for the Beechcraft D18 that really did sound like radial engines. You might want to look at his mod. The inclusion of the GTN750 is most appreciated. I know it's not period authentic, but after all, this is a flight simulator. The P-38 never had an autopilot, but with the tablet that came with it, you can fly for hours. Please add the Approach capability since the HSI does have a glide slope function. (The P-38 can do an ILS landing even though the tablet is basic. ) The attention to detail is amazing! The "Easter Eggs" are fun. I would highly recommend this airplane for just the fun of flying it. Lots of practice in order to land it. Love the counter-rotating props! D^^^ this thing is big.! Well worth the price!!
Thank you Alien_Jim. For the sounds (engines, within the cockpit), I planned to add texture to them, but I don't want to rush something bad, I will take time to learn what I need to learn first. And it's exactly the process I'm into right now: learning about sounds :) - Regarding the AP, Approach... Hum... Maybe. I will need to think about this a bit more, but might do it in a future update. For now, as you said, you can already manually follow the glideslope, so you shoud be able to land in poor visibility already. - And thanks a lot for your comment and your purchase!

Great job on some innovative thinking and bringing us this very special aircraft. However, I do hope that The Lord and his minions can utilize all their resources and produce a sound package that is truly worthy of the mighty R4360 radials. Currently, the lack-luster engine sounds cloud-over this otherwise amazing achievement.
I'm sorry that the sounds are really degrading your experience. But yes, giving more texture, more life to these engine sounds is one of our main goals. In fact, in a few weeks I'm going to start learning how to design sound packs (for the Scrapyard Monster first), and then I'll apply these new skills to the XF-11 as soon as I know how to do it. In the meantime, I honestly think the sounds are not that bad, although I understand that this is all very subjective.

Also, you can use free-cam for a walk-around feature, like playing with the chocks and stuff. Thank you, Lord Frites, for bringing this wonderful aircraft into the simulator!

Some lovely touches and little easter eggs, and the ability to use basic AP plus some optional extras with the handy clipboard, this addon worth every penny. Also, a nice little PDF manual is included in the addon folder (yes, Lord Frites, I'm one of those who reads them! ;) . Flying this is a wonderful experience. A perfect plane from the Golden Years to add to the hangar. Texturing and modeling is top notch. The flight model is fantastic, spicy at lower speeds! The addition of autopilot and a clipboard EFB are great quality of life additions. Failures are included with the plane. I wish the plane had it's own sounds, but I understand the limitations of getting sounds from these MASSIVE engines. Overall a fantastic plane and a great addition to the sim.

Sorry for the sound that are not as good as you would have liked. But I will work on adding some more details to it in a future update. It will still be based on the same sound pack, but it should feel more vibrant! And I'm also glad that this point didn't affect too much your appreciation of the aircraft. A RARE craft indeed! After seeing the motion picture and some archive footage, you are left with some wonder as to what might have been. Howard Hughes had a reputation for seeking perfection. Was he on to something that the 'mere mortals' in the Air Corps overlooked? With the awesome power of twin R-4360 WASP engines, this ride certainly lets you know there is some kick available. I read that the superchargers become active at 18,000 feet and this was definitely felt. I think it's quite an understatement t o call the back seater a 'radio operator' as he was likely called upon to navigate and operate the recce equipment as well. I think the overall package here is great. I like the variety of liveries, especially the dark and olive drab versions. I saw this as quite a surprise, very unexpected. And I'm reminded that there are so many possibilities out there to explore. I'm looking forward to see if any mission packs may emerge as well as a follow on, such as the XB-46, a jet powered recce/bomber or the B-57 Canberra also a jet recce/bomber. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see what my imagination comes up with to explore what might have been had this come along a couple of years earlier for WWII and perhaps likely use during the Cold War, possibly as an early clandestine mission or test bed platform for electronics or even jet power . The Hughes XF-11, how cool is that? Way cool! I liked the instrumentation and pressurization system, the quality of the overall textures and model, the extra liveries, autopilot (but maybe a full autopilot in future?), GPS display, the 'electronic' clipboard, and basically everything. I did notice lack of contrails (looking forward to trying out the just released version). Might we see radio antennas and photo systems payload in future? I try to imagine this reawakening of the XF-11 as more of a 'what if' then just a take on the prototype!!! The R-4360s were a stable design, offered a lot of power, and were used in a variety of aircraft well into the 1950s. I rate this package with five stars for innovative modeling, visual features, both inside and out, systems, airworthiness, and performance. Certainly 'top drawer.'
Thanks a lot for your long message. In no precise order: the radio antennas are there, it's the two metallic objects in the middle of the nose glass tip. Missions some day... Probably. I will have to take my time and see with F99mlu how his tool can help me with that. But it's a project 😁 As for the contrails, you should be happy with the new update, I'm not worried. Thanks again.
With experience of some longer flights and an update, the XF-11 has come to life and is performing great! Once you get past familiarization, it all comes together as one great package. The compliment of liveries really helps to set this package part. With very good audio and animation, it is really hard to accept that this model was not put into use at least on a limited basis. If you like history and what if scenarios, then this model is one to get. It's a fine piece with everything you need for some exciting high altitude adventuring! Thanks for this!!!

Working on a Atlantic to Pacific Tour, 17 legs, and the only issues I have are with the GTN 750 addon and a roll to the left that I cant seem to get rid of. The 750's autopilot keeps turning itself on, before it's needed, something with the cockpit switches and the addon I suspect. The roll IDK, but I plan on ensuring any trim assists are off and testing the problem further before I blame the aircraft config. I don't have the issue with other twin engines, but I cant seem to trim it out, either too much or too little. My petty issues aside, it is a joy to fly and a beautifully detailed model.
Regarding the GTN 750, I've never experienced this. And as per requirement from PMS50, the integration of the GTN 750 has been tested and validated by them, so I don't think they noted this issue either. And regarding the left roll, it could happen if you don't have the same power/mixture on both engines, or one engine is on both magnetos and the other only on one, but once again, it is really supposed to fly straight and flat. Come and discuss these issues with me and other people directly in the Discord if you want. You will probably find more help.

Absolutely brilliant plane to fly especially in VR. One minor issue I found though - if you have the Global AI Shipping Traffic V3 mod active and start a flight with this aircraft then MSFS will lock up.
Thank you :) And it's a strange thing, what you're experiencing. I will reinstall GAIST, test it, and take a look at what could cause a conflict. Thanks for the info. It's not sure I find the root cause, but I'll search!
Not a big issue since that GAIST mod hasn't been updated for a while so I just disabled it. Just letting you know that it's something to check in case you get any support requests for the same issue.

Very nicely modeled aircraft that offers performance well-above most piston engine twins. I've been enamored with the contraprop since first seeing it on the Convair Pogo then later on the Tu-95 and others so to finally get one in-sim is well-appreciated. This is a big airplane that handles exceptionally well at high speed, but requires constant low speed management. Superb cockpit viz and a detailed yet era-typical spartan interior combine with a slew of built-in features to make this a regular flyer.

Thank you for this excellent addon. The XF-11 looks very well , is easy to fly and bring a lot of fun to my flying time. I have one question. I am used to the GTN 750. Is it possible to add a bit more brightness to the screen? Even when the brightness is turned up completely, it looks like dimmed and then it is difficult to read. Thanks!
Thank you. I will take a look at this. Maybe I can increase the emissive strength of the screen. I think I really did the default integration so it should be exactly the same as your other aircraft. I'll see if I can boost it anyway.
Thank you Lord Frites for the update. Unfortunately the brightness of the GTN 750 screen is hardly better. That is no problem since the popup is exellent. The plane/engine handling is very fine and it is a joy to fly the XF-11. Very good work indeed!

I'm delighter that the developer created this particular Aircraft Model and brought his creation to MSFS It would be great if FF created a Howard Hughes avatar complete with fedora hat, that would complete the project. Thank you FF, and I look forward to your next creation, and good luck with future business projects.
Thank you Goggis. Regarding the custom pilot, I don't feel confident enough today, to create a custom animated character that would match the quality level of the aircraft or that could be a tribute to Howard Hughes :) I don't want to make an ugly Howard ;)

Thank you for your nice comment and review :) I'm glad that you appreciate this aircraft... and its manual ;)

Wonderful, simply wonderful. Great visual model and incredible performance. Plenty of monitoring required to nurse those engines up to the service ceiling too!
Yes, exactly. You can fly it rather easily but if you want to climb, it's where it starts to be challenging :) Thanks for your comment!

I must admit, i'm completely biased. I got onboard with Lord Frites after seeing his first creation come to life, the scrapyard monster... He asked me to "test" an early alpha version and that's how my love for this airplane started. His dedication to the work, the hours he has put in, are completely beyond me, his skills, also in keeping with my babbling, taking the key points and revising and adjusting and recreating something he'd already made because of the alpha and beta testers input is just simply Amazing. Due to this project i've delved deeper into the XF-11 and Howard Hughes than i've ever done before and also delved into the MSFS SDK to get a more accurate representation of how this aircraft shouldhave moved through the air, courtesy to numerous websites telling different stories about the XF-11 and it's disastrous first flight... but expert test pilots, flying the second prototype all agreed: This aircraft was faster off the ground than anyone expected, even though it's roll rate was low, it outperformed expectations... and that, i think, made Howard Hughes into a genius of his time. Kudos to Lord Frites for modeling an exceptional airplane, i'm proud to be part of the team... and yeah, #verybiasedandsatisfiedwiththisaircraft and #stillworkingonit Love your work, Lord F, enjoy the ride!
Thank you my friends. Nice words here :) And don't you ever go too far, I'll definitely still need your dedication and passion for tuning numbers for all that is coming next :)
yes m8! Ready and willing to explore more cessna's! ;)

The contour of the propeller spinner needs a bit of work. The aft section of the spinner needs to be tapered rather than cylindrical. As included in this simulator model, the shape of the existing spinners greatly diminishes the beauty of the airplane model, not to mention its accuracy. Existing photographs of the first aircraft seen from above the right wing with Howard Hughes in the cockpit show the correct contour of the spinner. Otherwise, it's a great model, outstanding detail, flies beautifully.
Thanks for your comment. I havent found side pictures of this mark 1, with the engines off and propellers not spinning. What you say is really interesting. I will try to find more references and then I'll be able to improve on these spinners. Thanks.

Great Aircraft! Very nice Model, a lot of Fun flying, Good Sound
Thank you Xelahu. I'm happy the sounds match your standards. I still want to give them more life, more texture, and I will probably do it after doing a few tests on my side 👍

What a beautifully rendered and crafted airplane! Gave me an instant big grin on takeoff - all I could think of was this was the Howard Hughes millionaire version of the P-38 :) . Hughes didn't realize this thing fits perfectly on the Italian coastline. Nice flight model already - love the radium dials, great paint inside and out, the wake trails are fantastic. Fun to have two retro rockets now - the XF-11 and the Learjet 35A!
Thank you 😊 I don't think Hughes really had the time to realize anything about the XF-11. Especially this one with its epic contra-rotating props! But yes, the feeling of flying it above beautiful landscapes is really good!
