This is the third extended airstrip I made. And this one gave me quite the headache. You wouldn't think that such a small patch of dirt could be so challenging until you find out it was one of the airports where Asobo had the idea to make the surface of the satellite image somehow mandatory to actually work in the flight planner and refuse every kind of other texture to workl. I didn't dig deep enough into this subject to find more detailed explanations what causes this. To make it short, it seems to be a bug of the current and the last versions of the SDK, together with the texture flickering issue. Another bug in this matter after deactivating all parameters for the stock airport can be that it also turns to a sea airport form one second to the other. Something more for a Zendesk ticket i suppose.
Anyway, back to topic: this airport is settled around 40 miles north of Whitehorse, the next bigger settlement with an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (couldn't believe it) in the Yukon area. It nothing more than a dirt strip and a little hut. However, the appearance of many red barrels or Oil drums scattered over the field is quite peculiar. These people seem to be a bit obsessed with these. Imagery from Google street view is exceptionally good in this case, so I tried to catch that "spirit". This airstrip is also home to apparently "world-famous" cinnamon buns which is why they made a sign calling it the cinnamon bun strip. I checked that out on Google and actually, these things turn out to be as big as a human head and quite delicious as the ratings show. Only the person serving them might not be the friendliest one :D But check for yourself. The strip and the Braeburn lodge seem to be well frequented by tourists or travelers. And that's why I also developed the scenery around the aiport a bit more.
So we have
- a wild airport appearance, meaning it doesn't look anymore like it's cut with a knife
- some scenic additions at the apron (a father checking out the plane with his children, some workers hanging about and of course a more or less big pile of messy wares and waste
- a greatly expanded area around the lodge, depickting the current building situation (BING maps). Here I added a lot of cars trucks and clutter as well as some NPCs to make it more lively
I am still not 100% sure that this modified airstrip works as it's supposed to. So if you run into problems, please give me feedback. Anyway, I got hungry now writing about cinnamon buns all the time and thus I am off, getting myself one (which is not so easy here in Germany :) )
