Propriété de la ville de Rennes, il est rénové à plusieurs reprises avant-guerre, dans les années 1950 et à la fin des années 1980. Entre 1999 et 2004, l'ensemble des tribunes sont rénovées ou entièrement reconstruites, ce qui lui permet d'accroître sensiblement sa capacité d'accueil pour atteindre près de 30 000 places assises.
