Smokepole was a P-47D serial 43-25402 belonging to the 19th FS, 318th FG in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
Originally the mount of Lt. Hal Dunning, it was passed to Lt. Doug Towner when Lt. Dunning rotated stateside on a war-bond tour.
Smokepole survived at least 22 missions dropping ordinance on Japanese targets, and Lt. Towner went on to fly P-47N "Lonesome Polecat" during long range escort missions.
I was fortunate enough to get in touch with Lt. Towner's son, Mike, several years ago while building a large scale model of Smokepole. Mike provided what precious few photos he had of his father to use as references, they are included in this post.
